This Monday I wanted to make a boot-able USB-Stick with a Knoppix .iso on Linux. I used the “dd” command to do this.
Situation:
1. Laptop with Linux Mint on it
2. HDD mounted to System (.iso File on it) 1Tb HDD with 800 GB used
3. USB stick mounted on System (to make boot-able)
4. command used: sudo dd if=/HDD/knoppix.iso of=/dev/sdb
What happened:
I accidently typed in the wrong path into the command! Instead of writing to the USB I copied the knoppix.iso onto the HDD. As I noticed my fatal mistake I immediately stopped the process. Only one or two minutes passed! I viewed the file structure of the HDD and everything was at it’s place. So I unmounted the HDD and didn’t think of it any more. Once at home I attached the HDD to my Home Computer with Win7 Professional. I got a shock as I saw that my data was gone and the unpacked knoppix.iso was on the HDD. Since then I didn’t attach the HDD to any kind of computer any more!
Since this happened I tried to find a solution to resolve this problem but I want to be sure not to mess anything up since I have no experience at recovering date. “And I didn’t follow the golden rule: BACKUP“
What I want to do:
I found a program for Linux “http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec” called PhotoRec. So now I want to try recovering the Data with this Program!
My question to you:
Is this program good in my case? And do you have recommendations on how to use it?
Do you know any other Programs which could help me?
